DCM – Something Old, Something New

It’s Lythan’s turn to set the challenge this week over at Daring Cardmakers and she chose the theme ‘Something old, something new, etc.’   For my something old, I used these gorgeous vintage buttons, something new is the text stamp – I haven’t bought any crafty goodies for a few months, but the last thing I bought was some Papertrey stamp sets, and this is one of them, so it’s the newest thing I have!  Something borrowed is tricky, but you could say I ‘borrowed’ this idea as I’ve seen a few cards with this button heart idea.  For the something blue I’ve added a blue strip underneath the kraft card, and some little blue pearls. 

You might notice these pictures are better than those on my blog recently – that’s because my fabulous boyfriend has just bought me a lovely Canon camera.  I’m still getting the hang of it, but for my first attempt I’m pretty happy with these photos.  My only issue now is that I don't have internet access at home - I'm battling with Virgin media to try and get set up some time before I'm 90!!

Daring Cardmakers - Let's Rock

 
Sorry for posting so late this week, but I've been moving into a new flat in London, so have been without internet over the weekend.  Thankfully, (thanks to my lovely boyfriend) I now have my craft stuff all set up and ready to go, so I'm fully operational again.  (I won't tell you what he said when he realised that out of the hundreds of boxes he helped me carry up the stairs, only one little bag contained clothes - EVERYTHING else was craft stuff!   Anyway, this is my card for this week's challenge over at Daring Cardmakers - Kathy set the challenge this week to make a card that rocked (ie. had a shaped bottom) - and as a double dare to have the theme of rock.  I used a Tim Holtz grungeboard shape as the main feature for the card (without thinking that having it off centre would affect the rocking ability of the card), so I then had to counterbalance it.  I added the little flourish which has been embossed with copper and verdigris powders, but I also had to stick a couple of metal brads to the inside of the card to stop it tilting to one side.  Next time I make a card with this shaped base I'll remember to centre whatever I stick on it!!

Father’s Day Card

I decided to keep it simple for my dad’s card this year.  I hate doing mens cards and to be honest, I know whatever I do for his card, my dad won’t really notice anyway!  I could spend hours creating something amazing and my dad will just say ‘oh yeah very nice, thanks’.  I’ve only got one greetings stamp for father’s day and it’s quite small, so I decided to avoid that all together and do something a bit different.  I’ve had this purple onion greetings set for years and I love the font.  The star is a grungeboard star that I’ve painted and glittered and I added a nice vintage button to finish it off.  I just hope he notices……….

Daring Cardmakers - Father Christmas

It’s Jo’s turn to set the challenge this week and she decided to get us all started on our Christmas cards by setting the theme of Father Christmas.  It was only when I got my stamp folder out and started looking through my Christmas stamps did I realise that I’ve only actually got one stamp featuring Santa, and that’s this Crafty Individuals stamp.  The backing paper is My Minds Eye, then I stamped the lovely rooftop scene onto white card and added some water and ecoline inks to create a background.  You can’t see from this pic but the moon and stars have got some glamour dust on to give some extra sparkle.

I'm sorry that the photo is so poor - I definitely need to get a decent camera - I've told my boyfriend that's what I want for my birthday next month so fingers crossed he'll get me one - I expect he's quite glad I told him what I want as he's hopeless as choosing things himself!

Erratic blogging

Sorry I’m being a bit slack with my blogging at the moment.  I’m working in London during the week and it’s seriously affecting my crafting.  I’ve got a few pics to share of cards I made over the last couple of weeks, just to send to friends mostly.  I’m hoping to have more time this weekend to get lots of samples done for my next class at the Holiday Inn.  I’ve thought up the theme, it’s just a case of getting a spare couple of hours.  I’m not going to spill the beans yet, but I will say that I’m going to share with you my foolproof method for thinking up new ideas when inspiration seems to disappear :)  I’ve still got a couple of places left, so if you’d like to come, just drop me an email.

This was a very simple idea for a sympathy card.  The background is a Tim Holtz embossing folder that I’ve rubbed with white ink to highlight the design, and the flower is stamped onto vellum and embossed with clear powder for a very subtle effect.

More little birdies – I can’t stop using this lovely papertrey set, so versatile.

This was an extra card I made when doing last weeks Daring Cardmaker challenge.  It’s much more simple than my challenge card, but I really like it and think these bright colours go perfectly with the coloured flowerpot images.

I’ll be back tomorrow with my DCM card, then hopefully I’ll have lots to share over the weekend.

New storage unit

I saw this sad looking cupboard in a local charity shop last weekend and thought it would be great for storing my jars of buttons.  It was painted a horrible shiny black, and was very chipped and dusty, but a bargain for £5.

 

I went straight out and bought some Farrow and Ball paint and spent a couple of hours painting it.  Unfortunately, the shiny black paint seemed to be some sort of plasticised paint, so even with a bit of sanding, I had to apply an undercoat first as the paint was just forming little droplets on the surface.  So it wasn’t the quick, easy job I thought, but worth the effort in the end!  I used cream paint for the outside then a lovely sage green inside.

Daring Cardmakers - June Flowers

The challenge this week at Daring Cardmakers is the monthly flower series, and the flowers for June are Rose and Honeysuckle.

Like most people, I didn't have anything with honeysuckle in my stash, so decided to go with roses.  I recently downloaded these lovely flowerpot images from Scrap n Fonts, so decided to use three of them as my main image.  They are coloured in with promarkers, then I layered them up to give a 3d effect and added some glamour dust to the flowers.  I didn't think that was enough roses so I also added some crepe roses - these were made using the sizzix 3-d die.  Using crepe paper is a bit of a tricky operation as it's so fragile, but worth the effort I think.

 

The backing paper is from the free papers that came with this months Simply Cards and Papercraft magazine - I thought they were perfect for this theme.
