I recently bought a MISTI tool – if you haven’t heard of this new product, then pop over to www.mysweetpetunia.com for lots more tutorials and videos. MISTI stands for Most Incredible Stamping Tool Invented, and I have to say, having used mine for a few weeks, I really think it is!
I won’t go into details about how to use this, there are already so many tutorials out there, but I will give a little detail about extra things I’ve bought to use with mine. You can see in this photo, that I have a plastic grid sheet underneath my card. You can buy sheets of grid paper cut to the right size to fit inside the MISTI, but I wanted something more permanent that I could wipe clean and reuse. At the Stitches trade show a couple of weeks ago I had a look to see what grid sheets were available for quilting as I had a feeling one of those would work.
I picked up this pack from my local Hobbycraft – there are two sheets in the pack, so I cut one down to fit the MISTI then I cut two smaller sheets so I could overlay these over my cards for lining up text (there are also other techniques you can do with smaller sheets of plastic for lining up your stamps, but I’ll save that for another post).
I thought I’d show you step by step how I made this card using the tool as that will really give you an idea of the endless possibilities this tool gives you.
Note how perfectly straight and lined up the coloured rectangles are – you’d never be able to get them that straight by eye.
The diagonal striped rectangles are from the Simon Says Stamp swatch stamp set.
I placed my card in the tool, making sure that it fitted snugly against the left hand edge, then placed the stamp where I wanted the first rectangle to be. I lined this up so that the top of the stamp lined up with the 6 inch line. I then closed the lid to pick up the stamp.
I inked up the stamp with a pale pink, then closed the lid to stamp it onto the card. I used a magnet to hold the card in place while I did this. The fantastic thing about the MISTI is that if you don’t get a good impression, or you want the colour to be a bit stronger you can ink up your stamp and stamp it again. It will stamp in exactly the same place, which you could never achieve any other way (even with a stamp-a-ma-jig you’d struggle to get it exactly in the same place).
Now the first rectangle is stamped, you move your card up so that the last image is just above the 6 inch line. Then you ink up the stamp with the next colour and stamp again.
Move it up again, and carry on to the bottom of the card.
Next, I stamped the zebra from the Paper Smooches Zoo Crew stamp set and cut him out.
I stamped the greeting in the bottom right hand corner (using the MISTI of course), then added the zebra just above.
This technique makes it so easy to line up border stamps for repeat stamping. I’ve listed below all the supplies I used for this card, and I’ll be back soon with some more tutorials using the tool.
